Pollution Control and Modeling (PCM)
Environmental pollution is one of the most widespread and challenging problems the world is facing today. The rapid and unsustainable industrial and urban development of the past decades, along with unabated population growth, has resulted in extensive pollution of the air, water and land, leading to significant impacts on human health and the environment. Climate change is likely to further exacerbate these threats.
Specific topics covered in this track include, exposure to pollutants, adverse impacts of pollution on the environment and human health, the fate and transport of pollutants in the environment, environmental modeling, the measurement of aquatic toxicity, and methods for environmental protection and remediation with a focus on the removal of conventional and emerging pollutants from water and wastewater by physiochemical and biological processes. Both field/laboratory investigations and numerical modeling of environmental systems are encompassed in this concentration area.
