Abstract:

Microplastics (MPs) are considered a new type of pollutant that invades different environmental regions. The gradual increase in consumption of plastic products has led to its abundance in the ecosystem as a result of the degradation of larger plastics into smaller particles. A great scientific interest in this topic arose from a series of unknowns that fell into different research disciplines. Research carried out in Turkey on the microplastic pollution in surface seawater and deepsea sediments is quite limited and remained on a small scale covering only several stations most of the time. To address this gap, an investigation of microplastic distribution, type, and color in 43 stations within the Marmara Sea of Turkey was performed for this aim. The novelty of this work is due to the selection of the stations which cover marine (MRN), pier (PIER), stream (STR), sea discharge (SD), and deep-sea discharge (DSD) stations of both sea surface water and deepsea sediments. Therefore, this talk will give detailed information on the microplastic occurrence, and the methodology of their sampling and detection. Finally, some of the obtained results will be shared underlying different future research perspectives.

About Nouha Bakaraki Turan:

Dr. Bakaraki Turan received her PhD in Environmental Engineering from Yildiz Technical University, Turkey. She continued her Post-doctoral studies at the same university in the Analytical Chemistry Department working on the determination of various micropollutants in wastewater using different microextraction methods. Afterward, she joined a project funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey where she masters her Postdoc researcher position studying microplastics in the Marmara Sea of Turkey. Dr. Bakaraki Turan currently works at the Nitrosamine Center of Excellence at Novartis Pharmaceuticals. In this department, she focuses on the development of novel analytical methods for the detection and quantification of Nitrosamine molecules at trace levels in different kinds of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and Final Products (FP).
